Hallberg moved to New York City in 2001, just months before the attacks. He was drawn to the city's energy and excitement, and he quickly fell in love with its vibrant culture. However, the events of 9/11 changed everything. The city that Hallberg had come to know and love was suddenly transformed into a place of fear and uncertainty.

In the aftermath of the attacks, Hallberg found himself struggling to make sense of what had happened. He was haunted by the memories of the victims, and he felt a deep sense of loss for the city that he had known. He began to write as a way to process his emotions and to try to understand the new world that he was living in.

City on Fire is a powerful and moving account of Hallberg's experiences in New York City after 9/11. The book is a tribute to the city's resilience and spirit, and it is a testament to the power of art to heal and inspire.

The City as a Character

One of the most striking things about City on Fire is the way that Hallberg portrays New York City as a character in its own right. The city is a living, breathing entity, and it has a profound impact on the lives of its inhabitants.

Hallberg describes the city's energy, its beauty, and its darkness. He captures the city's rhythms and its moods, and he shows how the city can both inspire and destroy.

The city is a constant presence in City on Fire, and it is a major force in shaping the lives of the characters. The city is a place of hope and opportunity, but it is also a place of danger and despair. It is a place where dreams can come true, but it is also a place where dreams can be shattered.

The Search for Meaning

City on Fire is also a book about the search for meaning in a post-9/11 world. Hallberg explores the ways in which the attacks changed the city and its people, and he asks what it means to live in a world that has been forever altered by violence.

Hallberg does not offer any easy answers, but he does suggest that there is hope to be found in the midst of darkness. He finds hope in the city's resilience, in the kindness of its people, and in the power of art to heal and inspire.

City on Fire is a powerful and moving book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. It is a book about the city, its people, and the search for meaning in a post-9/11 world.
