Few people have dedicated their lives to preserving the history and culture of a people as wholeheartedly as Dr. James A. Fall, the founder of the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository in Kodiak, Alaska. Dr. Fall's lifelong passion for the Unangan people (also known as the Aleuts) of the Aleutian Islands and the Gulf of Alaska has resulted in an unparalleled collection of artifacts, documents, and stories that tell the rich and complex history of this ancient culture.

The Early Years

Dr. Fall was born in 1932 in the small town of Seldovia, Alaska, to a family of commercial fishermen. He spent his childhood exploring the rugged coastline and bays of the Kenai Peninsula, where he first encountered the Unangan people. As a young boy, he was fascinated by their traditional way of life, their intricate carvings, and their deep connection to the land and sea.

In 1950, Dr. Fall enrolled at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he studied anthropology. It was during his undergraduate years that he met Dr. Frederica de Laguna, a renowned anthropologist who had conducted extensive research on the Unangan people. Dr. de Laguna became Dr. Fall's mentor and lifelong friend, and she inspired him to pursue his passion for Unangan history and culture.

The Alutiiq Museum

After graduating from college, Dr. Fall returned to Kodiak, where he founded the Alutiiq Museum in 1967. The museum's mission is to preserve, interpret, and share the history and culture of the Unangan people. Over the years, Dr. Fall has amassed a collection of over 25,000 artifacts, including traditional clothing, tools, weapons, and artwork. The museum also houses a vast archive of documents, photographs, and oral histories.

The Alutiiq Museum is more than just a repository for artifacts. It is a living, breathing center for Unangan culture. Dr. Fall and his staff work closely with Unangan elders and community members to ensure that the museum's exhibits and programs are accurate and respectful.

Honoring the Unangan Legacy

Dr. Fall's work has had a profound impact on the Unangan people. For centuries, their history and culture were largely ignored or misrepresented by outsiders. Dr. Fall's research and the Alutiiq Museum have helped to restore the Unangan people's pride in their heritage. They have also helped to educate the public about the rich and complex history of the Unangan people.

Dr. Fall is a tireless advocate for the Unangan people and their rights. He has worked to repatriate Unangan artifacts from museums around the world, and he has helped to establish educational programs that teach Unangan history and culture to young people.

A Lasting Legacy

Dr. Fall's lifelong dedication to the Unangan people is an inspiration to us all. He has shown us the power of one person to make a difference in the world. Through his work, he has helped to preserve the history and culture of the Unangan people for generations to come.
